Residents of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba can contact a Legal Desk for legal help and advice in the course of 2024. Minister Franc Weerwind for Legal Protection is setting up a Legal Desk in the Caribbean Netherlands because such accessible access to legal aid and legal aid does not yet exist there. The counter in the Caribbean Netherlands will consist of physically accessible locations with support from the Legal Counter in the European Netherlands where necessary.
Minister Weerwind: “Every resident in the Netherlands should have the feeling: the right is there for me too. Also the residents of the Caribbean Netherlands. This starts with reliable, understandable information and clear legal advice. Employees of the Legal Desk provide this help every day in the European Netherlands. High time that the residents of the Caribbean Netherlands could also take advantage of this.”
Access to justice
With the services of a Legal Desk, residents of the Caribbean Netherlands know better what their rights are and what the options are to enforce them. Problems or disputes can be resolved earlier, preventing unnecessary escalation. Legal Desk employees provide information, help and advice, but also refer you to a specialist or social assistance if necessary. Residents can also go to the counter for reporting discrimination and legal assistance in the event of unequal treatment. The facility will not have an income limit so that all residents can receive help. The facility’s services are aimed at private individuals, not at self-employed persons and entrepreneurs.
Local environment and needs
The Legal Desk will tailor the help and support to the demand on the islands. For example, people should receive information, help and advice in their own language from professionals who themselves have a connection with the islands. Existing social organizations on the islands are actively involved in the provision of services. Active information is necessary to draw attention to the Legal Desk. The availability and use of digital resources are also taken into account when setting up the facility.
