The gas pipelines connecting Russia to Germany were damaged by explosions. This released thousands of tons of methane. The EU and NATO assumed that sabotage had taken place. The Kremlin dismissed speculation about Russian involvement as “stupid and absurd”.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the two gas pipelines have caused much geopolitical tension after Moscow decided to cut gas supplies to Europe in response to Western sanctions.
