The railway viaduct at Hoogeveen will receive major maintenance around the turn of the year. The construction leaks water on the A28 and as soon as the temperatures go far below zero, the highway becomes slippery, which may be dangerous, Rijkswaterstaat states.

For example, the left -hand lane from Fluitenberg to Hoogeveen was closed for the last nights. “With temperatures tight under freezing, we can keep the situation under control, but when it freezes it becomes a slide,” says spokesperson Jayme Tol.

The problem is mainly in the joints of the viaduct. The water flows through it and that problem cannot be resolved. “A kind of rubber concrete is regularly sprayed in,” Tol explains. With that they close it.

The leak is only temporarily remedied with that. “If you want to solve the situation completely, major maintenance is needed.” In addition to the viaduct, the asphalt is therefore looked at the spokesperson. “Then it must be out.”

All that work will probably take place at the end of this year, or at the beginning of 2026, Rijkswaterstaat states. “There will soon be a warmer period, it will freeze somewhere afterwards, then we will of course continue to spray the rubber concrete,” said Tol.

Due to the smoothness, a car was slipped last Monday at the viaduct reports Rijkswaterstaat. Sprinkling extra salt at night was not very excited in recent days to continue toll. “Salt works when it is run in and it is too quiet at night.”

Then it stays on the road, he explains. Just before the morning rush hour there will be scattered again and the traffic can continue the salt.
