A week before the second leg of the Champions League in Munich, Bayern’s opponents Lazio Rome are in a thick situation. Coach Maurizio Sarri clearly criticized the club management’s transfer policy on Monday evening after the 1-2 defeat at Fiorentina in the Italian Serie A.

After the defeat, the reigning runner-up Lazio is only in eighth place in the championship (in the table). The gap to a Champions League place is already eight points, but the Romans made it to the semi-finals of the cup and also won the first leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League against FC Bayern 1-0. Nevertheless, the 65-year-old, who took over the club in the summer of 2021, is anything but satisfied with the breadth and depth of his squad. Sarri said that the team was by no means sufficiently strong to play in four competitions.

Lazio spent significantly less money on transfers during the former Chelsea and Juventus coach’s tenure than in previous years (statistics). Sarri now made it clear that this had not always been in his interest – especially since he felt his wishes were not sufficiently heard by the club management. “When I asked about player A, they let me choose between C and D,” said the coach, who added: “It wasn’t me who decided on the transfer market.” Now it’s time for “everyone to have their own “takes responsibility.”
