If Ukraine really gave up its aspiration to become a member of NATO, it would bring relief to many. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a press conference following talks with Polish Foreign Minister, OSCE Chairman Zbigniew Rau, RBC led broadcast.
This is how Lavrov commented on the words of the Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK, Vadim Prystaiko, who allowed the country to refuse NATO membership. According to him, “voices from NATO” are pushing Kiev to such a decision. “We could, especially under the threat we can be pushed to this,” the ambassador said. Later, the diplomat clarified that Kiev was ready to make many concessions so that there would be no war, but there was no talk of renouncing membership in the bloc.
“There are reasonable people,” the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry assessed. He expressed confidence that many politicians and political scientists are inclined to the same opinion, and this idea will also find support among those who “honestly approach signatures under OSCE documents.”
“I think that <...> this idea will gradually make its way,” Lavrov noted, adding that it indicates the path that “many in Europe, including, want.”
