In “The White Lotus” season four, Helena Bonham Carter’s departure becomes Laura Dern’s opportunity. Dern joins the HBO series, taking over the spot left vacant by Bonham Carter’s surprise exit late last week. as Deadline reports.
According to Deadline, White is rewriting the role for Dern rather than simply fitting her into the character originally conceived for Bonham Carter. HBO said in a statement last week that after filming began, it became clear that the original version of the character that showrunner and series creator Mike White had created for Bonham Carter “did not add up” on set.
Der and White have a long-standing collaboration that dates back to his directorial debut “Year of the Dog” (2007). Together they then developed the HBO series “Enlightened”, which ran from 2011 to 2013 – Der was celebrated for her performance and won a Golden Globe. She also had an uncredited cameo in season two of The White Lotus: She lent her voice to Abby, the wife of Michael Imperiolo’s character Dominic, during a brief phone conversation.
Cannes as a new location
Set during the Cannes Film Festival, season four of The White Lotus follows a new group of guests and hotel employees in a luxury home on the French Riviera. The ensemble already includes Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Chris Messina, Kumail Nanjiani, Rosie Perez, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Sandra Bernhard, Alexander Ludwig, AJ Michalka, Ari Graynor, Chloe Bennet, Ben Schnetzer and Nadia Tereszkiewicz, among others. According to Deadline, production is ongoing as White writes Dern’s role into the season.
HBO has not yet announced a broadcast date for season four.
