Largest traffic nuisance due to works around Kortrijk

The work for the so-called trumpet connection of the Kortrijk ring road with the A19 and E403 motorways is causing the most disruption, with traffic jams and diversions. If everything goes according to plan, the work will continue until next year. In addition, there will also be disruption on the Ei and the E17 around Kortrijk, on the E403 highway near Rumbeke and also on the E40 in Oudenburg.

46 large sites throughout Flanders

In 2023, work will be carried out on 46 large construction sites on the Flemish motorways, including a series of major interventions on bridges and tunnels. This involves a total investment of 569 million euros.

Work is being carried out on 46 large construction sites on highways this year, Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters (Open VLD) announced this at a press conference in Maasmechelen on Sunday.

The Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV), Lantis and De Werkvennootschap are responsible for the sites. According to the latest report from AWV, from 2022, the quality of the Flemish motorways has been improving for three years in a row. However, there are many bridges and tunnels in Flanders, most of which date from the 1960s and 1970s, which are often outdated and need to be thoroughly renovated. Peeters wants to eliminate that backlog step by step. Of the 46 large construction sites, 24 are for bridges and viaducts and 6 for tunnels.

Road works inevitably cause disruption. AWV advises to check www.wegenenverkeer.be before departure. Safety on the construction sites is a priority, Peeters emphasises. “Therefore once again a call to respect the speed limit and signage. Be extra careful when approaching a construction zone.”

LARGE SITES IN WEST FLANDERS

These are the major sites in West Flanders in 2023:

  • R8/A19 in Bissegem/Wevelgem: renewal Trumpet connection

Due to the renewal of the trumpet connection, there will be serious nuisance near Aalbeke. The works will run until 2024. Through traffic is possible in both directions on the R8, over narrowed lanes.

The entrance and exit Gullegem Zuid and parallel road A19 towards Kortrijk from Moorsele will be closed for 2 months. There is a diversion via the E403 and E17.

  • E17 near Kortrijk: construction of a pressure pipeline between the pumping station and the ‘Ei’

Due to the construction of the pressure pipeline, there will be moderate disruption, especially at the start of the works that will run from May to October of this year.

  • E17 near Kortrijk: renew asphalt and install dynamic signage

Traffic towards France will continue in 1 lane from 8:30 pm to 5 am for 15 nights in August.

  • E403 near Rumbeke: bridge repair

The works in Rumbeke will continue in the autumn of 2023. First, the direction of travel and the exit towards Kortrijk will be closed. After that, the direction of travel and the exit towards Bruges will be closed

  • E40 near Oudenburg: replacement bridge joint

Due to the replacement of a bridge joint, there will be disruption from September to October on the E40. There will be limited disruption, traffic will have passage in one lane.
