On Friday, June 13, 2025, the Schleswig-Holstein language apprenticeship day took place at the Technical University of Lübeck. 40 language teachers and coordinators of six universities came together to talk about the future of foreign language training.

Language education in challenging times

The President of TH Lübeck, Dr. Muriel Helbig, in her greetings, emphasized the importance of linguistic and intercultural understanding, which she also in her function as vice president of the German academic exchange service (DaAd) is particularly important. She praised the initiative to rely on language education and promote exchange in these politically challenging times, and agreed to the network.

Foundation of a network

The head of the language center at TH Lübeck, Nina Dethlefs, was impressed by the Dynamic development of the network of linguistic institutions at universities in Schleswig-Holstein.
Six universities have taken up this swing and signed a joint declaration of intent to establish a corresponding network as part of the language apprenticeship 2025: TH Lübeck, FH Kiel,, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel,, European University Flensburg,, Flensburg University of Applied Sciences and FH west coast. The common goal: work more closely, exchange knowledge and resources and offer mutual support.

Between AI and internationalization: the future of language theory

The language apprenticeship day offered the participating practice-oriented workshops, lectures and intensive exchange in the network working groups. It was about the challenges and opportunities of the present: What role does artificial intelligence play in language teaching? How can language learning offers be designed in a contemporary and diversity -friendly manner? How does linguistic institutions succeed in developing innovative and sustainable strategies? And thus to support the internationalization of universities?

What remains?

A newly founded network and a lot of motivation for future meetings that should now take place at least once a semester.
The day reflected the enormous commitment of the network and the expertise of everyone involved. The energy and the common will to constantly develop the foreign language teaching at the universities of Schleswig-Holstein were clearly noticeable everywheresays Dethlefs.
