Rijkswaterstaat has completed the repair work on the viaduct at the Lankhorst junction. The work started after the morning rush hour and was completed around 6 p.m. Earlier than expected, Rijkswaterstaat said.
Last Thursday, pieces of concrete fell from the viaduct on the A28. For safety reasons, one lane of the A28 was closed in the direction from Zwolle to Meppel. The connecting road of the A32 towards Hoogeveen was also closed.
Now that the repair work has removed the loose concrete pieces, all roads are open again.
A spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat previously explained that the concrete damage was caused by corrosion in the steel reinforcement of the viaduct.
This allowed CO2 to penetrate the concrete and corrode the material. This caused the reinforcement, i.e. the steel construction or mold of the viaduct, to rust.
The rust causes the steel to expand and pieces of concrete can crumble. Definitive damage repairs will be carried out at a later date. It is not yet clear when that will happen.
