Sturla Holm Lægreid delivered a remarkable Olympics moment by publicly admitting to cheating on his girlfriend. Now he spoke about the consequences of his interview.

Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid not only collected five medals at the 2026 Olympics, but also delivered one of the strangest interview moments of the Winter Games. He confessed in a TV conversation that he had cheated on his girlfriend. Confession left its mark on him.

Lægreid told the Norwegian broadcaster NRK almost two weeks after the biathlon competitions in Antholz: “It was difficult to eat and sleep, so I became thinner than I should be.” After the Winter Games, it was nice to be home and pick yourself up again.

The seven-time world champion is hoping for improvement before next weekend’s competitions in Kontiolahti, Finland. “I hope we get a lot of good food here so I can eat properly and regain my strength,” he said.

The trigger came from a TV interview after winning the bronze medal in the individual competition. In tears, Lægreid confessed to cheating on his girlfriend and spoke of his “biggest mistake.” He wanted to use the interview to win his girlfriend back – which didn’t work.

The heartache did not harm his sporting achievements. In Antholz, Lægreid won three silver and two bronze medals. “It went surprisingly well,” he said. “It just goes to show that not everything has to be perfect – you just have to be present.” You have to give your best when it matters. “You don’t need perfect preparation, perfect nutrition or perfect sleep. What matters is what you do yourself at the moment.”
