Real Madrid have probably squandered their remaining hopes of winning the Spanish La Liga championship. In a difficult away game against fifth-placed Betis Sevilla, coach Alvaro Arbeloa’s team conceded a goal shortly before the final whistle to make the final score 1-1 (0-1) and thus suffered the next serious setback.
Vinícius Júnior gave Real the lead (17′), but Héctor Bellerín equalized deep into added time (90’+4). In advance, national defender Antonio Rüdiger, who had been rotated into the starting line-up, was unable to make a decisive clearance.
Barcelona can still increase the distance
The gap to league leaders FC Barcelona is currently eight points, but the arch-rival led by German coach Hansi Flick can move ahead to eleven points with a win on Saturday (from 4:15 p.m. in the live ticker on sportschau.de) against FC Getafe. Five match days and therefore 15 points are still outstanding.
At the Estadio Olímpico de la Cartuja it was the duel of the losers of their European quarter-final duels. Real lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League over a week ago, while Betis lost out to Sporting Braga in the Europa League. After around a quarter of an hour, Real benefited from a goalkeeping error; Real captain Federico Valverde’s long-range shot was bounced away by Alvaro Valles, so that Vinicius only had to push in. But that wasn’t enough, Real conceded another goal in their tenth league game in a row.
