After a weak performance at Kellerkind Girona FC, Real Madrid dropped two points and relinquished the top spot in La Liga.
Late on Sunday evening (November 30th, 2025), the Royals couldn’t get past a 1-1 draw with the third-from-bottom team and in the end they even had to thank keeper Thibaut Courtois for not losing one point. Azzedine Ounahi gave the hosts the lead in the 45th minute, and Kylian Mbappé equalized from the penalty spot in the 67th minute.
The game got off to a particularly slow start, with Real finding it extremely difficult to combine fluently and create scoring opportunities. Coach Xabi Alonso always seemed very dissatisfied on the sidelines. The ex-Leverkusen coach got really angry when Aurélien Tchouaméni shot at the goal from almost 30 meters in the middle of the first half, but clearly missed it.
VAR concedes Mbappé goal again
Four minutes before the break, Xabi Alonso also celebrated after Kylian Mbappé somehow maneuvered the ball over the line from a poke in the six-yard box. But the wild protests of the Girona defenders quickly made it clear that something hadn’t happened quite according to the rules. In fact, the VAR intervened and the goal was disallowed because Mbappé had touched the ball with his hand shortly before the goal was scored.
And things got even worse for the Royals. Seconds before the break, Girona pulled off a perfect counterattack; it was only the second really dangerous scene after a long-range shot from Viktor Tsygankov, which Thibaut Courtois was able to parry (26th). Courtois then had no chance against Azzedine Ounahi’s finish because the Moroccan chased the ball into the right angle at full speed against the keeper’s direction.
Header chance for Eder Militao
In the second half, Real became more determined and increased their risk. Even central defender Eder Militrao joined in the attacks and almost equalized in the 54th minute – but Girona keeper Paulo Gazzaniga parried his header.
In return, the collective advance almost had its revenge. Real’s defense was suddenly wide open, Iván Martin initiated a lightning counterattack, at the end of which Vladyslav Vanat appeared completely free in front of Courtois. However, the Belgian in goal had the upper hand in the direct duel against the Belgian striker.
Vinicius Junior takes a penalty
Instead of 0:2 it was 1:1 ten minutes later – Real equalized with a penalty kick. Vinicius Junior had entered the penalty area from the left, Girona defender Hugo Rincon slapped his foot – the penalty was justified. Vinicius Junior briefly grabbed the ball, but then had to leave the execution to Mbappé – who converted confidently.
After that, almost only Real played. It still wasn’t a feast for the eyes, but at times the pressure was enormous. Even Antonio Rüdiger repeatedly got involved in the attacks, but the clear chances to score were rarely created. A shot from Vinicius Junior just wide of the goal (81′) was the most dangerous scene for a long time, but in return Vini Junior’s loss of the ball also gave Girona another great chance to counter – but Joel Roca couldn’t get the ball past Courtois. In the third minute of added time, Mbappé had the winning goal for Real, but he also shot just wide.
