Nick Kyrgios and Stéfanos Tsitsipás have been fined by the Wimbledon tournament management. The Australian and the Greek must pay 4,000 dollars (3840 euros) and 10,000 dollars (9590 euros) respectively for unsportsmanlike behavior.
Kyrgios and Tsitsipás faced each other on Saturday in the third round of the Grand Slam tournament in London. The match ignited in the closing stages of the second set, when a linesman approached the umpire to inform him that Kyrgios had misbehaved verbally. The tennis player was given a warning.
After the last run of the second set, Tsitsipás hit a ball into the audience. Kyrgios demanded that Tsitsipás – like Djokovic in 2019 – be disqualified, but the number four of the seeding list got away with a warning.
In the third set Kyrgios hit an underhand service and out of frustration Tsitsipás returned the ball with a hard blow that ended up far behind the court. The Greek had no intention of hitting the ball inside the lines and that resulted in a point penalty.
In the remainder of the set, the frustrated Tsitsipás tried to hit his opponent several times. Kyrgios challenged him by calling out “good ball” when his opponent made mistakes.
Tsitsipás accused his opponent of “bullying behavior” at the press conference afterwards, which was laughed off by Kyrgios. The Australian won the match 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-3 and 7-6 (7) and thus qualified for the eighth finals. In it, he plays against American Brandon Nakashima.
