Kurre and Jenna Westerlund arrived Dancing with the stars – broadcast on Sunday, October 26.
The program will feature a special episode called Roosa Nauha, the aim of which is to raise funds for Finnish cancer research.
The evening is important to Kurre Westerlund himself. His mother died at the beginning of October and the latest diagnosis was blood cancer.
– We had a funeral last Saturday. Pretty quickly we wanted to get it out and let’s move on, says Kurre.
The funeral was the couple’s third in a short time.
– Both my grandmothers passed away just before the wedding, Jenna says.
– This is a bit of a rollercoaster. First is the wedding, then we’re already celebrating the funeral, says Kurre.
Kurre says that the mother’s diagnosis came two days before her and Jenna’s wedding. There was a lot of discussion about the mother’s participation in the wedding.
– I asked my mother about it. Normally, I would never have left it out, but he felt that he couldn’t take it, says Kurre.
Mother had considered attending church only. However, even the doctor was of the opinion that participation is not reasonable.
– We made the final decision on Wednesday at the doctor’s visit. We didn’t want to take any extra risks. But he was still there in spirit, says Jenna.
Support from others in the midst of grief
The bigger collapse came after Kurre and Jenna’s honeymoon. Kurre describes that the mother usually wanted to be at home and she was also able to get home care easily from the hospital.
After the honeymoon, the situation was different.
– The dramatic thing was that when we visited there, he no longer said that he wanted to go home. Yes, he had an instinct himself, says Kurre.
Mother died on Kurre’s birthday. Kurre remembers his mother warmly.
– He has always wanted to take care of me. It hasn’t even been ten years since he asked in the winter if I already had long boots on. He has always bought gloves, scarves and shoes, Kurre describes with a smile.
Kurre and Jenna describe that they get support from each other in the midst of grief.
– I’d be pretty lost without Jenna. During the last year and a half, we visited my mother six times a week, Kurre says and states that they took care of things like cooking and bills for Kurre’s mother.
– The joy it brought him. He thanked many times for those moments. They were really important to him and to us, says Kurre.
Kurre wanted the church to be played Mothersong called Kurre has composed the song for his mother as a Mother’s Day present. The 30-member Cantores Minores choir performs in the background of the song.
– It’s his song and will always be until the end.
