After central defender Marcel Beifus left the season, Karlsruher SC became active on the transfer market. On Friday, Baden confirmed that Stephan Ambrosius was returning. The 27-year-old is moving from FC St. Gallen 1879 to KSC on loan with a purchase option reportedly worth €200,000. Ambrosius had already temporarily played for the second division club from Hamburger SV in 2022/23.

The Hamburg native will be in the squad for the KSC’s second half of the season against Preußen Münster on Saturday. According to the club, he already has the right to play. Whether it will be an immediate solution remains to be seen. Ambrosius has only played four games for the Swiss this season. At the beginning he was injured for a long time, and recently he was out of action four times in the Super League.

“Stephan is a real competitor and an ideal solution for us in the current situation,” Karlsruhe’s sports director Mario Eggimann was quoted as saying in a statement about Ambrosius’ commitment. “He knows the KSC, the coaching team and has already played with some of the boys from the current squad. He is in good shape and therefore doesn’t need a long start-up time. He also has mentality and experience.”

This is how Ambrosius comments on his return to KSC

Ambrosius moved from HSV to St. Gallen on a free transfer in 2024, for whom he has appeared on the pitch 36 times so far. During this time, its market value fell from 900,000 euros to 500,000 euros. He is KSC’s number one winter signing and is supposed to replace Beifus, who suffered cartilage damage in his right knee during the first session of the training camp.

“I’m happy to be back at KSC,” said Ambrosius. “I still know a few people in the dressing room and I’m sure I’ll be able to integrate back quickly. I want to help the team as quickly as possible with my experience.”
