Moscow (dpa-Afx)-According to the Kremlin, the release of a American from Russian detention is a barter. Russia will soon expect the return of a Russian who is detained in the United States, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskow in Moscow.
“This citizen of the Russian Federation will be transferred to Russia these days.” His name is only mentioned when the man is back in his homeland, Peskow said to the state news agency TASS.
On Tuesday, a special envoy of US President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff, was in Moscow. From there he brought the US teacher Marc Fogel, which were detained because of alleged drug smuggling, to the USA. The White House also spoke of the fact that it was about an exchange.
Another agreements between the United States and Russia?
It was the first visit to a rank -high US representative in Russia since November 2021 – shortly before the start of the Russian attack war against Ukraine. On both sides, the process was rated as a sign that after a long bad relationship, agreements between Washington and Moscow could be possible. The Trump administration also wants to quickly reach an end to the Ukraine war.
“Of course, such agreements cannot make a breakthrough, but they are tiny steps to rebuild the mutual trust, which is now very low,” said Peskow. He did not comment on the question of whether third countries were involved in the exchange ./FKO/DP/MIS
