Despite transfers by Sancho & Elliott

Aston Villa not only has the smallest squad of the Premier League, but also the lowest transfer editions of this summer. The reason for both are the problems of the club from Birmingham with the rules on profitability and sustainability. Center and international Ezri Konsa (27) says that these rules “killed” his club in this transfer window.

“I don’t understand it myself, but from the outside it doesn’t look particularly good. I know that, and I know that it really killed us in this transfer period. We now have to get along with what we have,” the English international, who has a market value of 35 million euros, becomes of the “Times“Quoted.

These regulations state that clubs are not allowed to make losses of more than the equivalent of EUR 121 million over a period of three years. The Villans posted losses of EUR 99 million in the annual financial statements of 2023/24 – only Manchester United had more with EUR 151 million. The player salaries of the club, which has grown rapidly in recent years, devour 91 percent of sales.

Aston Villa’s ascent: Higher transfer expenses than FC Bayern

Since the promotion in 2019, the squad value has been climbing from EUR 96 million to the current 547 million euros – it reached the highest value in the summer of 2025 with EUR 656 million. For comparison: The association from Birmingham has paid EUR 860 million for newcomers since 2019 and made a transfer minus of EUR 327 million – FC Bayern invested 827 million euros during a transfer minus of EUR 267 million.

Now saving was announced and so Jacob Ramsey was sold to Newcastle for 45 million euros, whose transfer is 100 percent booked as a profit because he comes from his own youth. Six players-including Leon Bailey (Roma)-were awarded and only Evann Guessand (Nice) came up to the Deadline Day for 30 million euros (for all Villa transfers).

When asked whether Konsa followed the eventful Deadline Day, he said: “I definitely didn’t look at that. It was hard, especially for us. I knew that it would be difficult to sign players, so I didn’t look at the Deadline Day. At around eight o’clock I looked at Aston Villa on the Twitter Account, and we saw three players, and we have really signed that we really have. And have a prime-league experience.

Konsa’s employer signed the clubless Victor Lindelöf and signed Jadon Sancho (Man United) and Harvey Elliott (Liverpool). The squad value increased by EUR 66 million and the number of players from 20 to 23 – the villans represent the smallest team of the Premier League. The club, which reached the quarter -finals of the Champions League in the previous season and started this time in the Europa League, got a bad start with a point from three games. “We want to stay in the first six, among the top five. We want to play Champions League football. I was at Villa in the worst times, so I know how bad it can be. We are not yet at the goal. We have only been playing three games,” said Konsa, who has been in the club since 2019.
