Klaas Smid (65) will step down as mayor of the municipality of Noordenveld on November 1. Smid has been mayor there since November 2015.
Smid is in his second term as mayor, after his reappointment in 2021. Terms for mayors last six years, but the Hoogevener native will not complete his second term.
“This year I hope to turn 66 and after 35 years of local government I would like to make way and slow down a bit myself,” says the mayor. “I look back on the collaboration with the council, the council, residents and organizations in Noordenveld with a good feeling.”
PvdA member Smid previously served as councilor and faction leader in the municipality of Hoogeveen, council clerk in the municipality of Hardenberg and alderman in the municipalities of Hoogeveen and Ommen.
The municipality has announced that the recently appointed confidential committee will soon begin the search for a successor.
