Killer Mike speaks out about Grammy arrest

“My team and I are confident that I will be cleared of any wrongdoing.”

Actually, the rapper Killer Mike should have been one of the absolute winners of the event at the 2024 Grammys. He received an award three times on February 4th – in the categories “Best Rap Performance”, “Best Rap Song” and “Best Rap Album”. However, the evening took an unexpected turn when the 48-year-old was taken away in handcuffs on site, allegedly due to a physical altercation. Now the singer speaks out and explains what happened.

Despite the arrest, a good day for Killer Mike

After the awards ceremony, several US media outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter, reported that the Atlanta-born musician was arrested in front of the Crypto.com Arena in California, where the Grammys were awarded. Some media reported an argument with a security member, although this could not be finally confirmed. Now Killer Mike clarifies in a statement – it was actually a dispute with the security personnel.

“First of all, I would like to express my appreciation to the Grammy committee for the work that I and my team did for ‘Michael’,” the rapper (via “Billboard”) begins his statement, also referring to his song, which was released in 2023 and has now won an award Album MICHAEL. He continues and explains why the day was so special for him: “We are incredibly proud and enjoying this moment. I’m also grateful that one of my prayers was answered – the day after my Grammy win, I found out that my son, who has been on the list for a kidney for years, finally has a matching one. We are of course overjoyed.”

An “overzealous security guard”?

The musician, who is also known for his work with Run The Jewels, continues to tell via Billboard that the situation at the arena was a misunderstanding. He was in another area of the Los Angeles venue for a while and was stopped by staff when he tried to return to the specially marked security area. Security wanted to see his access card, which led to an argument and the hip-hop artist was taken away in handcuffs. Killer Mike is hardly more specific about the altercation, he simply says: “I would like to note that my team and I received a number of calls last night from concerned fans and colleagues who wanted to know if I was OK . I really appreciate the concern and support, but I’m doing better than fine. As you can imagine, it was busy and there was some confusion about which door my team and I should go through. We were dealing with an overzealous security guard, but my team and I are confident that I will ultimately be cleared of any wrongdoing.”
