US television presenter Savannah Guthrie has canceled her participation in the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in northern Italy. Instead, the NBC anchor wants to stay with her family after her 84-year-old mother Nancy was allegedly kidnapped in Arizona. NBC News reported that more information about Friday’s opening ceremony will be forthcoming.
Police suspect Nancy Guthrie was kidnapped from her home in Arizona.
“From what we saw at the scene, we believe a crime was committed,” said Chris Nanos, sheriff of Pima County near Tucson, at a news conference Monday. In a CBS interview, he reiterated: “I believe she was kidnapped, yes.”
Nancy Guthrie, who lives alone, was last seen Saturday evening. Family members reported her missing on Sunday afternoon after she failed to show up for the church service. “It didn’t go away on its own,” emphasized Sheriff Nanos in the CBS interview. “She didn’t leave willingly.”
