Trendstop brings FashionUnited readers:inside a first look at the latest resort 2023 collections in womenswear.
The first runway shows of the 2023 resort season featured a contrast of styles and design references. In difficult times, some designers chose to draw inspiration from the past, bringing back golden eras and positive memories. For others, fashion reflected the current situation, with challenging collections that reflect the mood of today. The desire to keep the collections diverse led to the fashion shows being split into different sections and offering a wider range of pieces aimed at appealing to a diverse clientele.
Gucci
The Castle del Monte in Puglia provided a fairytale backdrop for Alessandro Michele’s latest resort collection. Entitled “Cosmogonies”, the collection focused on metamorphosis, where garments and bodies seem to fuse and become one through the use of prosthetics. Historical references such as velvet, corset lacing, capes and Elizabethan ruffles mixed with galactically inspired, crystalline shimmer and shiny second-skin leather to create a multi-faceted spectacle of light and shadow, historical and futuristic.
chanels
Chanel’s resort extravaganza captured the historic glamor of the Monte Carlo location in a playful take on the Monaco Grand Prix. Inspired by racer suits, jumpsuits and all-in-ones came in the house’s classic tweeds, while starting flag graphics and fun prints graced skirts and dresses. The sporty flair continued throughout the collection in the form of cricket jumpers, biker jackets and shorts. Feminine embellishments, feathers, sequins and bouquets of silk flowers revived the seductive beauty of bygone times.
Balenciaga
Demna’s collection for Balenciaga was shown at the New York Stock Exchange building to put the past behind and focus on current events. Commenting on the dark times the world is facing and with a sense of urgency to respond to today’s challenges with creative solutions, the models donned black latex masks for the three-piece collection of classic office-inspired tailoring, eveningwear and a collaboration with Adidas. Oversized proportions, padded pumps and exaggerated sportswear silhouettes contrasted with second-skin base layers and stretch hoods.
