Kevin Keegan announces he has stage four cancer at a public appearance in Newcastle. The diagnosis was discovered by chance and the chances of recovery are slim.
Former HSV professional and England national coach Kevin Keegan has made it public that he is suffering from stage IV cancer. During an appearance at a theater in Newcastle, the 75-year-old spoke for the first time about the severity of his illness and his chances of recovery.
The diagnosis was only discovered by chance. “I was in a car accident and had to have surgery. During the exam for the surgery, they discovered that I had cancer,” Keegan said. “They said they had an absolute top doctor to treat what I have – stage IV cancer.”
His doctor put the chances of recovery at 33 percent. Keegan said: “I thought it was 80 or 90 percent. But at the moment I’m still here.” Back in January, Keegan’s family announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer. At that time there was talk of “persistent abdominal problems”.
Keegan is one of the defining figures of English football. At Liverpool FC he won almost everything in six years. At Hamburger SV from 1977 to 1980 he won the German championship once and the Ballon d’Or twice. He also played for Southampton FC and Newcastle United. He later also coached Newcastle and narrowly missed the championship in the 1995/96 season.
