Among the fastest four packers
After his third goal on Wednesday evening, the statistics collectors were over the moon. Kevin de Bruyne’s first hat-trick since 2011 and, in less than 20 minutes, one of the fastest in Premier League history. But then the Belgian went one better and is now even one of the not too many four-packers in the English top flight, while Manchester City are heading for their eighth championship with the resulting 5-1 in the catch-up game at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
It was a fourth straight win for Man City, who are again three points clear of Liverpool and may need just one win from their last two games, given a whopping +72 goal difference. Former Wolfsburg player De Bruyne put the Citizens ahead in the first half with his hat-trick (7th minute/16th/24th). The interim equalizer by Leander Dendoncker (11th) only briefly gave the hosts hope. De Bruyne scored again for City in the 60th minute, Raheem Sterling scored the final (84′). After beating Newcastle 5-0, Leeds 4-0 and Watford 5-1, the recent 5-1 win over Wolves leaves coach Pep Guardiola’s side a seven-goal advantage over pursuers Liverpool on goal difference standing there
A look at goals per game statistics in the TM database shows that De Bruyne is now one of only around 30 professionals in Premier League history to score at least four goals in a game. The fact that the former Bremen native only needed 53 minutes to do so puts him in the top 20 in this regard. The highest number of goals scored in a Premier League game is five, which has been reached by five players so far. The quickest in 2015/16 was De Bruyne’s former Man City colleague Sergio Aguero, who needed just 20 minutes between the 42nd and 62nd to score five goals in the 6-1 win against Newcastle in October 2015.
