Keti Koti month starts in Amsterdam: “I’m glad we can be here together again”

The Keti Koti month traditionally started this afternoon at the official residence in Amsterdam. After two years of corona, it was finally nice and busy in front of Mayor Femke Halsema’s house.

People spoke, sang and made music on the Herengracht. The Keti Koti month has begun. During Keti Koti, the past of slavery is commemorated and its liberation is celebrated. There were about a hundred people in front of the official residence this afternoon.

“I’m glad we can be here together again,” said one of those present. “To show that we are still here and because something has to be done about the suffering that my ancestors inflicted. Because it still works in 2022.”

Keti Koti ends on 1 July with the commemoration of the abolition of slavery at the National Monument to Slavery History in Oosterpark.
