For the first time, a representative from Kenya will be taking part in the World Cup in London. His debut on the world’s biggest darts stage takes a spectacular turn.
Darts professional David Munyua made a remarkable debut at the Darts World Cup in London and created a sporting sensation. Despite several calculation errors and a 0-2 deficit against Belgian professional Mike De Decker, the first Kenyan professional managed a spectacular 3-2 victory at a World Cup.
Munyua, who works as a veterinarian in Kenya in the countryside near the capital Nairobi, said after the game: “This is incredible. I’m happy with what happened here today. This is a really big moment for Kenya and Africa. We can do it.” He fought back tears after his success. “This is the best moment of my life,” added the surprise winner at Sport1.
The outsider initially finished with 135 points and then celebrated, even though he still had ten points left. Later he had to hit double 20, but threw to double 16 and hit that too. “I’m happy that it wasn’t crucial that I miscalculated,” said the 35-year-old on stage at Sky.
At Alexandra Palace, the “Ally Pally”, the debutant increasingly became a crowd favorite. Munyua, nicknamed “Why not”, fought back and also defied a wasp that sat on his face during the game. The fans in London celebrated Munyua with the song “David Munyua Wonderland”, which was sung in reference to England’s record world champion Phil Taylor. The fans had celebrated the 16-time champion with this song for years.
Opponent De Decker received boos during the game, but every missed throw was cheered by the spectators. The 30-year-old, number 18 in the world rankings, was the last Belgian darts player still represented at the World Cup. Mario Vandebogaerde, Kim Huybrechts, Dimitri Van den Bergh and Andy Baetens had previously failed in the first round.
