Disguised as a compliment, the Kees Tol show vtwonen has been completely demolished at Eva Jinek’s talk show table. “It’s a bit irritating. Then they come back with all those stupid words!”
Kees Tol’s program vtwonen is a success on the early Sunday evening of SBS 6. It was discussed yesterday in Eva Jinek’s talk show by TV editors Tamar Bot and Fanny van de Reijt, who are known from the podcast Mediameiden. They see Kees’ show a bit as ‘irritainment’, TV to annoy you.
Predictable
According to Fanny (photo: left), Kees’ program is very predictable. “It is so incredibly predictable, for eighteen seasons. You actually watch exactly the same episode every week and that is of course wonderfully relaxing. It’s about couples who can’t agree on the decor in the house.”
She continues: “The man usually wants sleek and industrial and the woman usually wants frills. And then a stylist has to come and solve it a bit. Well, just enjoy.”
Fancy wabi sabi
The interior stylists in vtwonen stick the most arbitrary terms on their designs, says colleague Tamar. “Fancy wabi sabi for example. What does that mean?! No idea. This always happens. It is always like this: a man wants a sleek style, the woman wants a cozy style. Then they will act as if it cannot be brought together.”
She continues: “Then a stylist comes in and of course they can’t say, ‘we’re going to do a little bit of both’, so they come up with a hysterical term. It’s always something like: ‘hotel chic meets factory’. Or ‘minimalism with a blush on the cheeks’, that kind of terminology. It’s also a bit annoying.”
Bruise
It is a typical example of irritainment, says Tamar. “That’s why I like watching the program so much. It’s kind of like when you have a bruise that sometimes you’re going to press on it. I also have that here. Then I think: yes, then, they will come up with those stupid words again, but you still want to see that.”
Gijs Staverman does not understand the ladies. He is not that impressed with vtwonen. “How can you watch the same program for 18 seasons? It’s all the same!”
Never seen
Omroep MAX boss Jan Slagter is also not a regular viewer of Kees and his home show. “I have never seen the program, so it is completely new to me. But when I hear ‘cuddly’ interior and stuff… No, you know, my wife does that and she has good taste. I don’t think we need that program.”
He concludes: “But if, I understand, 700 thousand people look at it, I think it’s a lot. On a Sunday evening. Cheers.”
