Earlier this week it was announced that AZ had hired Portuguese football agent Jorge Mendes to receive the highest possible transfer fee for Smit. Mendes visits potentially interested clubs for AZ and has been told by Max Huiberts, director of football affairs at AZ, what AZ wants to earn from Smit.
“They are trying to get the best possible deal out of it,” says the youngster himself about hiring the football agent. “Then I can ultimately choose where I want to go.” Smit says he has no preference for his future next step. “It doesn’t matter to me, as long as I can play football.”

“I understand that you are asking about it. I don’t know exactly what it is, so I can’t say much about it. I just want to play football and that is the most important thing.”
AZ coach Maarten Martens does not think that the transfer rumors will cause distraction. “I think he remains calm about it. I see that he works hard and he leaves few things behind.”
