Kees Kwakman about the disastrous Volendam fire: ‘Now 25 years later I realize again: I was very lucky’

It is 25 years after the fatal New Year’s disaster in Volendam. A tragedy in the village in which fourteen young people died and two hundred people were injured in a café fire. Former football player and ESPN analyst Kees Kwakman, aged 17 at the time, was also in café ‘t Hemeltje on the evening in question and survived.
