Keeping ban and community service for Heemskerkers who seriously neglected their dogs

The two owners of four dogs seized in February have been sentenced to suspended community service and a (temporary) ban on keeping dogs. The court imposed this on the duo after the National Animal Protection Inspection Service (LID) found the dogs seriously neglected.

The duo was convicted on October 10 after the LID found three huskies and a sheepdog following a tip to the National Animal Abuse Reporting Center.

Feces, urine and waste

According to the court, it has been proven that at least one of the dogs was kept in a severely soiled crate and home from December 2022 to January 2023. Waste, feces and urine were found around the dog(s).

A sheepdog was too thin when the MEMBER found it and was in ‘poor nutritional condition’. According to the court, this could not be proven.

Keeping ban

The woman (P.) has been sentenced to a fully conditional community service of 40 hours. As a special condition, she is required to report to the probation service and is prohibited from keeping dogs during the two-year probationary period.

The man (H.) has been sentenced to a fully conditional community service of 40 hours. He will also be banned from keeping animals during a two-year probationary period. All four dogs have been seized. Both suspects have appealed.

Neglect of animals

Province-wide, the LID removes neglected animals from the home on average a few times per quarter. According to LID spokesperson Jelko de Ruijter, residents whose animals are seized are ‘often already on the radar of the local police officer, municipality or housing association’. According to De Ruijter, there is a relationship between animal neglect and the inflation crisis. “You notice that people pay less attention to their pets due to tighter wallets.”
