Berlin (AP) – At Hertha BSC, a first challenger for club boss Werner Gegenbauer for the post as president of the Bundesliga club is emerging – but not from the camp of investor Lars Windhorst.

According to information from the German Press Agency, the entrepreneur and fan Kay Bernstein plans to present his plans for a candidacy shortly. First, the “Bild” newspaper reported about it.

Accordingly, the 41-year-old Bernstein, who was a leading member of the ultra-group Harlequins ’98, wants to ensure that Gegenbauer is voted out at the general meeting on May 29th. This would require a three-quarters majority of the Hertha members present and entitled to vote. Hertha wants to inform the members in the official letter of invitation whether there are any applications for deselection for the meeting. However, if the controversial Gegenbauer were voted out of office, a new election would only take place later at a necessary extraordinary general meeting.

The date of the general meeting is two weeks after the end of the season and thus after the decision on whether Hertha can prevent the seventh relegation in the club’s history from the Bundesliga. This would already be possible this Saturday with a win in the penultimate game of the season against 1. FSV Mainz 05.

A showdown between Windhorst and Gegenbauer is also expected at the meeting. Windhorst recently called on the club members to apply for the current management team to be voted out of office. It is no longer possible “to achieve something together as a team under the leadership of Mr. Gegenbauer,” Windhorst told the TV channel Bild. However, Bernstein as a candidate would clearly run counter to the interests of the investor.
