Massimiliano Allegri is allowed to continue as coach of Juventus Turin for the time being. This was announced by club president Andrea Agnelli after the surprising 0:2 in the Champions League at Maccabi Haifa. The Bianconeri are a long way from reaching the round of 16 in the “premier class” as they are five points behind second-placed Benfica Lisbon with two games to go. Next Tuesday (9 p.m.) the direct duel with the Portuguese is on the program.
“I find it difficult to think about a change,” said Agnelli at “Sky sports‘ about a change in the coaching bench. However, the 46-year-old announced a decision at the end of the year. “There is no individual responsibility, it’s not the coach’s fault if we don’t win a duel,” he said. For Juve, the defeat in Israel was the fourth of the current season, in which the Italian record champions are only eighth after nine games in Serie A. The “old lady” last started weaker in 2012/13 – then as now with Allegri as coach. The 55-year-old has been back on the sidelines since last summer, after having worked for Juve between 2014 and 2019. In his first term in office, he averaged 2.27 points in 271 games and also won eleven titles.
The situation is different during his second station, in which he has scored an average of 1.78 points in 64 games to date. A look at Juve’s coaching history shows that Luigi Delneri last had a lower value of 1.58 in 2010/11. That season was the last without a title for a long time before there was nothing to be gained for the “old lady” in the previous season. “It’s a problem of the group, the general attitude and so many games that should have been easier but weren’t. We have to be ashamed and apologize to the fans who are having problems at the moment,” Agnelli said, referring to the current situation. In the time leading up to the World Cup break, which starts next month, it is now up to Juve to position themselves well. The Bianconeri expect a marathon of eight games within around four weeks.
