Rewinding the tape of a season a little like this can seem complicated even for those who are masters of screenplays or directions.
Giovanni Veronesi, what title would you give to this Juventus final?
“I would make a horror film out of it. The slowdown from Verona to Fiorentina was too sudden. And now…”.
And now the Champions League is a big puzzle. Indeed: a chimera.
“Really. And if I think back to the match points we had to secure ourselves, I lose my good mood.”
Are you afraid of the derby?
“And I couldn’t fear it: we gave Toro a motivation that, perhaps, they wouldn’t have had. Taking away even the last, very weak chances, will give the Granata that extra adrenaline that can direct the duel. They will also want to deny us the pleasure of listening to what happens on the radio in Verona, Cremona or San Siro.”
As a Juventus fan, what sensations did a championship swing give you?
“There was a moment when I believed that with Spalletti we could take off… It didn’t go that way”.
Has an explanation been given?
“I think the team doesn’t have the qualities to get ahead of everyone.”
A leap backwards. In one of your screenplays, who gets the liveliest or funniest role?
“Conceiçao because he is a Juve type: he has courage, he plays to make people smile, he uses that typical resourcefulness useful for always beating the man. I like him, he has always done that.”
Beyond the derby there is…
“I hope for a bit of continuity: it’s Elkann’s turn to take the field. What would I do in his place? I don’t know, it’s not an easy matter to resolve the problems that afflict our Juve, it’s not a matter of little importance also because a lot of it starts from afar.”
With Bremer and Yildiz out of the picture, does all the weight fall on Vlahovic’s shoulders?
“We missed Vlahovic, but now he has had his day: I don’t know if he would be the right striker for the future, maybe not, he had his opportunities without taking advantage of them.”
What if I tell you algorithm?
“For heaven’s sake… I’d like to meet this algorithm in person to tell him about it (laughs, ed). But how do you choose like this? It also exists here: on page thirty-two of the script someone didn’t give what was asked of them, let’s cut it… It doesn’t exist.”
