Former Polish skiing star Justyna Kowalczyk-Tekieli experienced a crushing loss on May 17 when her husband Kacper Tekieli died in an avalanche in the Swiss Alps.

The tragedy of an experienced mountaineer has deeply touched the whole of sports-mad Poland. That’s why Tekiel’s well-known colleague Krzysztof Wielickin the assessment of the cause of the accident was received in the country with shock.

– According to the saying, mountains don’t kill, it’s people who make mistakes. Just going to the mountains is dangerous. Unfortunately, Kacper probably made a mistake, Wielicki told Fakt.pl.

The comment caused such an uproar that the man felt it necessary to retract his words. Wielicki admits that he did not know enough about the events on the Jungfrau mountain, which resulted in Tekieli coming down the slope for more than a kilometer.

– I apologize that my assumptions regarding Kacper Tekiel’s accident were unfounded. They were due to insufficient information about the case. After learning more, I consider it purely bad luck and an accident that could have happened to any of us.

– I apologize to Justyna if she felt offended, Wielicki addressed his words to the grieving widow.

News agency Pap has interviewed an experienced climber Leszek Cichyawho agreed that mountaineering itself always involves danger, no matter how careful the preparation.

– He (Tekieli) paid great attention to climbing safety, but mountains are sometimes unpredictable. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, Cichy insists.
