Justice is handling more and more cases of sexual violence

Rape and indecent assault remain the most frequently handled cases, followed by child pornography. The newspapers of L’Avenir report this on Friday.

Between 2017 and 2021, a total of 78,175 cases were registered with the public prosecutor’s offices in Belgium, according to an answer from Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD) to a parliamentary question. The figures come from the database of the Board of Prosecutors General.

The largest number of cases was recorded in 2020: 17,712. The number of files with images of child sexual abuse in particular experienced a striking increase (+80 percent), partly as a result of the lockdowns.
