It is a serious risk for Arjen Lubach now that his viewing figures at RTL 4 are under pressure: for the first time it is on TV for the first time as the similar to here. And what if the viewer really likes the competitor and skips his daily jokes for the weekly bouncer of Niels van der Laan and Jeroen Woe? He will squeeze him a lot.

Just here, a megahit has grown in recent years and there is a whole machine behind it. Executive producer Evelien Heus and light designer Martin Beekhuizen are lifting a tip of the veil in the latest Varagids.

X-like desk

Evelien and Martin, for example, reveal that an X-like Desk was very consciously chosen. “The huge X-like Desk has no symbolic value, but is a TV trick: you watch through it, you see a leg moving; it looks less massive and you experience more depth thanks to this design,” can be read in the guide.

This way there is a thought behind everything. The logo from just here for example. “Those are the two vertical stripes of a pause button. Just here!”

Wood trick

And all that wood in the decor? “That is a trick to suggest depth. The fence hangs on the ceiling. The back cloth is exposed extra warmly at the opening, for the contrast with the blue logo.”

And that blue logo was also consciously chosen, just like the blue of the desk. “The color blue has been chosen because of the association with news; Blue is the news color (think: Nieuwsuur, or NOS). After all, the jokes in a moment are about current events.”

Depth

Depth is, however, the most important element of the decor. “You also create depth with light: the back cloth, the wooden fence and Jeroen and Niels are highlighted separately (and differently), to turn on the contrast and suggest more depth.”

“To speak with the light designer: this seems like a simple decor, but it takes a lot of technology to make it work.”
