Jussi Hakulinen and Olli Lindholm argued and agreed several times

Jussi Hakulinen, founding member of Yö band, died on August 9. The relationship with the band’s late soloist Olli Lindholm was problematic for years.

Musician and founding member of the band Yö, Jussi Hakulinen died on August 9 at the age of 57.

The Yö group was founded in 1981 and its founding members included soloist Olli Lindholm, keyboard player Hakulinen, guitarist Jani Viitanenthe bassist Juha Rauäng and the drummer Harry Varhala.

Many of Yö’s biggest hits are Hakulinen’s handwriting included Swan song, Love is as white as snow, Dirty Legends 1, A broken angel and A song for the two of us.

Lindholm died of an illness in February 2019.

The relationship between Hakulinen and Lindholm was problematic for years. The friends were each other’s feelings since the 80s, and they quarreled and made up several times.

Lindholm has said that Hakulinen was never involved in other band’s parties. Rock life was completely foreign and repulsive to the musician.

Although Lindholm later sobered up, the relationship with Hakulinen continued to be challenging.

Hakulinen first played in Yö for only four years. The joint Taipale lasted until 1985, after which Hakulinen went on a solo career. Disagreements about the band’s practices, songs and personal relationships led to the parting of the ways.

The last nail for Hakuline was when the other members didn’t want to appear openly.

According to bass player Juha Rauäng, Hakulinen was a person who was always a bit of an outsider. When the other members of the band wanted to play in the band, rock first – The search list was interested in art.

The departure of the lyricist was a hard place for the band, because they were afraid that All Yö would fall apart.

In the 1990s, Hakulinen returned to compose and write lyrics for Yölle, when he and Lindholm settled their differences.

However, in 2011 Hakulinen and Lindholm broke up completely.

Hakulinen has said that he had no contact with Lindholm after that. In the same year, Hakulinen ended his cooperation with Yö.

The breakup started when, in 2011, Hakulinen wrote a song that Lindholm “couldn’t quite get into” singing.

The friends agree that Hakulinen will sing the song. In the end, Lindholm dropped a song from the concert set, which hurt Hakulinen.

In the spring of 2017, a modified version of the song Joutsenlaulu was presented in the program Vain lääää, although Hakulinen had stated that he would not give permission for its publication.

Lindholm was in the program, and the song was performed by Samu Haber.

The dispute was dealt with in the market court. The matter was resolved in Hakulinen’s favor.

A variation of the swan song was banned from being played on television, radio or the internet. Sanoma Media Finland Oy was obliged to reimburse Hakulinen’s court costs and to pay him EUR 5,000 with interest as compensation.

When Lindholm died in 2019, Hakulinen would have liked to say his last goodbyes to his long-time friend, but there was no invitation to the funeral.

Hakulinen was also left out of Yö’s three memorial concerts. At that time, Hakulinen expressed the wish that his songs would be performed in memorial concerts only on the condition that the proceeds of the concerts be donated to charity in full.

After Lindholm’s passing, Hakulinen has said that he does not regret that he and Lindholm parted ways musically. However, the search list was saddened by the fact that the relationship with a long-time friend was broken.

– We should have sat at the same table, but one where these abusers who appeared in the business are nowhere near. That conversation did not take place, Hakulinen told Iltalehte in 2019.
