Junghans is growing again – customers want mechanical watches

The watch manufacturer Junghans grew again last year, but has not yet completely overcome the corona dip. Sales increased by 8.4 percent to a good 19 million euros, as the family company in Schramberg in the Rottweil district announced. In the first years of the corona pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the traditional manufacturer had recorded a decline in sales.

“Last year we grew more abroad than at home and want to further increase our level of awareness internationally, for example in the USA,” said Managing Partner Hannes Steim of the German Press Agency.

Looking back, he spoke of a turbulent year with regard to inflation and delivery bottlenecks. The manufacturer therefore had no activities in Russia. Junghans closed 2022 with a profit – Steim did not quantify this.

There is more interest from customers in mechanical watches. “Last year we produced almost two thirds of mechanical watches, among watch lovers: the higher art of watchmaking,” said Steim. “We see that customers rely on classic values.” Junghans had long relied on electronic watches.

Steim is confident about the current year: “We expect to achieve sales of 23 million euros.” At the beginning of the year, Junghans increased prices across the entire collection by around six percent.

The clocks are assembled at the location in the Black Forest. Many movements are sourced from Switzerland. A stable 110 people are employed. In the 1960s there were still around 6,000. (dpa)
