In the 1946 women were not simply spectators, but the true protagonists of the change: female voter turnout exceeded 89%marking the definitive transition towards full citizenship. The news of the time conveys the image of composed and silent queues in front of the polling stations, with the electric cars aware of holding unprecedented power in their handseven careful not to stain the ballot with lipstick so as not to invalidate the vote.

The contribution of the twenty-one “constituent mothers” elected on that historic day was decisive in inserting the principles of formal and substantial equality into the Charter.
