Cycling world champion Julian Alaphilippe was seriously injured in a mass crash during the race in Liège
French cycling world champion Julian Alaphilippe was seriously injured when he fell at the Liège-Bastogne-Liège spring classic.
The 29-year-old broke a shoulder blade and two ribs in a pile-up with 62 kilometers to go. He also sustained a lung injury. This was announced by his team Quick Step. His condition is stable. Alaphilippe will remain in the hospital for observation for the time being. It was not announced how long he would be out.
Alaphilippe’s Belgian teammate Ilan Van Wilder was also involved in the accident. He broke his jaw and is also being treated in a clinic. The young Belgian star Remco Evenepoel, who also drives for Quick Step, secured victory in the classic.
