Alexander Zverev wasn’t the only one who won his first round match at the Australian Open. Two German women also celebrated an important success.

Jule Niemeier celebrated an impressive opening victory at the Australian Open. The 25-year-old gave her opponent from Poland no chance. Niemeier won against qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6:0 and 6:1. The match only lasted 74 minutes.

For the first time, the German tennis ace survived the first round of the Australian Open. The Dortmund player will now play against number 17 seeded Ukrainian Marta Kostjuk or Nao Hibino from Japan.

Laura Siegemund also reached the second round. The 36-year-old from Metzingen won after 3:16 hours against the American Hailey Baptiste 4:6, 7:5, 6:4. In the second round, Siegemund will face Chinese tournament favorite Zheng Qinwen.

Siegemund celebrated their opening victory with an emotional jump. “That means a lot to me,” said the 36-year-old: “I’m just proud of myself that something like that can still happen even on a not so good day when I’m playing so-so.”

The doubles specialist didn’t want to look ahead to the big challenge against Zheng. Siegemund said she wanted to take the time to “enjoy what’s going on”: “I don’t feel like dealing with the next opponent 30 seconds after a match.”

Dominik Koepfer’s start was less successful. The German qualifier from Furtwangen gave the Australian local hero Jordan Thompson a tough fight, but had to admit defeat 6:7 (3:7), 4:6, 6:4, 3:6.
