On Friday, February 21, the Court of First Instance of Bonaire put back the responsibility for the situation at Selibon Lagun at the Bonaire Executive Council. The ruling confirms that there was task with regard to licensing and enforcement. However, the judge concludes that the Executive Council of the Public Body Bonaire (OLB) should have had one last short term to resolve things. The measures that have since been taken by the acting government representative (WRV) calls the court desirable and necessary and are being maintained.
Since the November 2024 substance, a lot has been done under the responsibility of the WRV to tackle the problem at Selibon Lagun. Urgent violations of legislation and regulations at the Waste Center have now almost all been corrected, so that the acute risks for the short term have been averted.
Harmful waste
The containers with asbestos -containing waste on the site were already repaired at the end of January 2025 and containers for new asbestos are on the site. The slaughter waste is now being processed correctly, the fence of the Waste Center meets the regulations and the security of the waste center has been tightened.
Last measures
A solution has been found for new biomedical waste, a new cooling container will soon be installed. Special transport packaging from the Netherlands has now been shipped for the removal of the biomedical waste present. These will arrive in March, after which the repackage of the 9 containers starts. The biomedical waste is then taken to the Netherlands to be destroyed there.
Follow -up to the Executive Council
It is now up to the Executive Council to complete the latest measures quickly and adequately and to connect it to the waste policy for the longer term. The WRV transfers the used and completed measures to the Executive Council.
For the wnd. The government representative is crucial that concrete results are achieved quickly in good cooperation. The WRV continues the inter -administrative supervision in the context of Selibon Lagun with the aim of a structural solution for a healthy and safe waste policy on Bonaire.
