Judge considers the pre-trial detention of young suspects in the Yorneo case in Emmen

Three young men from Ruinerwold and Emmen have to appear in court today. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), they played a role in the killing of 26-year-old youth worker Marit from Groningen. The cases are not yet being substantively dealt with, that will happen at the end of January 2024.

A 17-year-old teenager from Ruinerwold and two 20-year-old men from Emmen are said to be directly involved in the incident, which took place at the Yorneo youth institution in Emmen. On January 14 this year, both targeted the safe of the institution, where the youngest was staying. Supervisor Marit was stabbed and kicked to death. The men point to each other as the person who allegedly stabbed.

The Public Prosecution Service assumes qualified manslaughter. This means that the two had the plan to commit a theft, but that the murder of the supervisor resulted from this. That reports RTV North.

Police arrested the two shortly afterwards. Another 20-year-old Emmen resident was also arrested later. He is seen by the Public Prosecution Service as the leader of a youth gang, of which the other two were members.

The pair had been sent by the ‘boss’ to rob a gas station in Emmen, but it was closed. In order not to return empty-handed, the plan was made to steal the safe.

The gang is also held responsible for, among other things, a violent robbery of a McDonald’s and a street robbery in Emmen. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the group members were vulnerable young people, some of whom lived under supervision.

In addition to these three, a 19-year-old boy from Groningen and an eighteen-year-old teenager from Roden are also in custody. The preliminary case of the teenager from Ruinerwold is behind closed doors today. The affairs of the people of Emmen are public.
