Marco Frigo seized second place in the stage, Raul Garcia Pierna finished third.

The first leading group of the day was formed by the Gal Glivar quartet, Jonas Gregaard, Edward Planckaert and Pierre Thierry.

Juan Ayuso loosened himself from the peloton on the climb of the Port del Canto to attack the leading group and eventually the Spaniard also took over the lead. After he was the first to be upstairs on the Port del Canto, Ayuso was picked up by Mads Pedersen.

Then several riders arrived at the duo, including Jay Vine. Not much later the connection was sought from the peloton by nine riders, including Alex Molenaar and Jardi Christiaan van der Lee. Their attack was not successful, the leading group retained the lead of a good minute, later extended to two minutes.

The second climb of the day, the Puerto de la Creu de Perves, became a prey for Vine. The Australian rider got the mountain jersey again a bit firmer around his shoulders. With a good fifty kilometers to go, Van der Lee also dropped back to the peloton from the second group.

Vine also struck on the Coll de l’Espina, where he took the full booty. Purchasers Marco Frigo and Sean Quinn then traced the Australian in the descent and on the way to the foot of the Slotlkim of this Friday, De Cerler.

In between, Pedersen still took the intermediate sprint, after which the Dane let himself be raised. Ayuso grabbed the leading position and drove a little minute ahead of pursuers Frigo and Raul Garcia. At three kilometers from the finish, Joao Almeida started again, after which he was immediately chased by Jonas Vingegaard, Giulio Ciccone, Sepp Kuss and Egan Bernal.

It no longer had no influence on Ayuso’s stage win, the Spaniard booked his first stage victory in the Vuelta ever.
