“The Lange Jaap is in our DNA. With young and old, with sailors, in the navy. When the Lange Jaap is in sight, you are at home,” says Jan Roelofsen of Huisduiner Belang. “I saw it happen. The cracks in the cover plates were getting worse. But there was no money, no knowledge. Ultimately, trust was created and now it is a matter of money and technology.”

This required the necessary actions from the Huisduiner and Den Helder population. A lot of attention has been paid to the preservation of the lighthouse. Jan Dop: “We had MPs here and presented the minister with a petition.”

A large part of the population around the Lange Jaap sympathized with the lighthouse. Jan Roelofsen: “You could see it in the cards, socks, special stampspaintings, little Long Jaaps. And an ice cream for whoever was the first to see the Lange Jaap, when you return from holiday.”
