Ex-Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer found his time in the band “creatively extremely restrictive”. There was no way to deviate from the band’s established sound, he told Guitar World magazine. Nevertheless, it was “a blessing and a wonderful experience” to be a part of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

“Of course it’s sad when something is taken away from you. I’ve been with them for a perfect ten years. But as much as I loved these people and loved playing with them, it was also enormously limiting creatively,” said Klinghoffer. “They are an established band with an established sound and over time I learned how little it was possible to deviate from. As much as I thought they were open to experimentation, they generally stayed true to their recipe.”

Even though he had to relearn a large catalog of songs for the Peppers, he didn’t feel overwhelmed, Klinghoffer said. “I was in orbit with the Chili Peppers before I joined them. John and I were good friends and I went on tour with the band in 2007 as second guitarist.”

Klinghoffer played in the band for around a decade from 2010. He originally joined the Peppers as a replacement for John Frusciante, and was forced to leave the band when Frusciante returned in 2019. After his sacking, he toured with Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder and played on Vedder’s final solo album, Earthlings.
