NHL legend Jonathan Toews said on Friday that he will end his long playing career. Toews, 38, spent his 16-year NHL career playing mostly with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he won three Stanley Cups (2010, 2013, 2015). The Blackhawks drafted him in the third round of the summer 2006 draft.

Toews was a big part of the Blackhawks, which became a dynasty in the 2010s. He was the club’s captain from 2008 to 2023. The Canadian had to put his career on hold due to health problems, but he returned to the rinks last season in the ranks of the Winnipeg Jets.

At age 38, Toews played the third full 82-game regular season of his career. 29 points were scored (11+18).

In Chicago, the center, who was nicknamed “Captain Serious” (Finnish: Kapteeni Vakava), particularly impressed with his cool head and leadership. He and star forward Patrick Kane formed one of the NHL’s most effective radar pairings over the years.

Kane remembered his old radar partner on the messaging service X after the news.

– I couldn’t have asked for a better teammate when I came into the league and I’m proud of everything we achieved over the years, Kane wrote.

Toews is the sixth most effective player in Blackhawks club history. In 1,067 regular season games, he scored 883 (372+511) power points. He also ranks in the top ten in the club’s internal goal and assist exchanges (goals 6th, assists 8th).

Toews was selected to the NHL All-Star game five times, and he played in the event three times. The Winnipeg forward’s trophy cabinet also includes the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player in the playoffs, which he won in the spring of 2010.

At that time, Toews led his team to its first Stanley Cup victory in 49 years, being the second most effective player in the entire playoffs. 29 (7+22) power points were created in 22 matches. In the 2012–2013 season, he won the Selke Trophy awarded to the NHL’s best defensive forward.

On the international level, Toews won Olympic gold twice, in 2010 and 2014. He also played in the World Championships in the spring of 2007 and 2008.

Toews joined the illustrious To the three gold club as the youngest player in its history in the summer of 2010. He won Olympic gold and the Stanley Cup in the same year. He won the World Cup gold in the spring of 2007, when Canada defeated Finland in the final match. Toews is still the youngest player to achieve the feat.
