Jonas Hofmann sees himself confirmed with the Leverkusen move: “Maybe makes more sense now” for critics

Title “quite realistic”

Almost four months after his emotionally discussed move from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Bayer Leverkusen, Jonas Hofmann sees himself fully vindicated. “It was the right step then and is the right step now,” emphasized Hofmann before the third Europa League group game against Qarabağ FK from Azerbaijan (Thursday, 9 p.m./RTL).

“For a few other people who criticized it at first, it might now make more sense when they see where we are in the table,” said the 31-year-old: “The sporting aspect alone speaks for itself about this change Hofmann had previously played for Gladbach for seven and a half years and played 214 games. During the upheaval before this season, he was intended to be captain until Leverkusen surprisingly pulled his release clause of 10 million euros at the beginning of July.

Hofmann immediately became one of the top performers at the “Werkself”. The German international was directly involved in eight goals in the Bundesliga, making him the best scorer for his team behind Victor Boniface and fourth in the league. While Leverkusen is still unbeaten in the German football upper house and sits at the top of the table with 22 points, Gladbach is in 13th place with one win and six points.

With Bayer 04, who was one of the big winners in the Bundesliga’s latest market value update and whose squad increased by 17.3 percent to 523.25 million euros, the right winger is hoping for a title that he considers “quite realistic”. He also wants to improve his chances of getting a place in the squad or even a regular place at the home European Championships next summer. Under the new national coach Julian Nagelsmann, he was on the pitch for 25 minutes against Mexico, but was not used against the USA.
