the issue

The government wants the use of children in commercial vlogs, advertisements and on social media to be punishable, at least until the age of 15. In the Issue we pose a question or statement to our readers about this. Also comment below.

With the ban, Minister Thierry Aartsen of Work and Participation wants to ensure protection of children who are used online to promote products, outings and brands. According to the minister, this can have a major impact ‘on the development and well-being’ of children.

For example, online images do not disappear and that can entail privacy and security risks. Children can also develop a negative self-image if their parents or companies consciously or unconsciously use them as a ‘revenue model’.

Until now, children aged 13 to 15 have been allowed to work, but only if it involved light work. They are also allowed to participate in films and TV programs under supervision and under strict conditions.

What do you think about this issue? Should you be able to use children up to the age of 15 in (family) vlogs and commercials, or do you think this falls under child labor if money is made from it? Perhaps you have had experiences of working before the age of fifteen? Join the conversation.
