The treatment has taken a significant physical toll on the star chef. His passion for food has become difficult, resulting in a loss of 25 kilograms and the loss of his hair. Yet, he refuses to give up.
“The journey is the destination. I can’t force anything. I must live with fate,” Lafer states. He does not shy away from describing how extensively the disease has spread in his body. A Dream He Wishes to Fulfill
Because of this, Johann Lafer no longer postpones his wishes. “One mustn’t delay anything,” he says. One particular dream lingers: he wishes to visit the base camp of Mount Everest in the Himalayas. Whether he can make this journey remains uncertain.
Lafer also hopes to visit an alpine cabin soon. These goals provide him with strength, as do his family, his wife, his two children, his doctors, and close friends. Some people have reconnected with him after 30 years, which has touched him deeply.
He is also in contact with fellow chef Alfons Schuhbeck, who is also battling cancer. Lafer reveals that they have communicated warmly and can talk openly with each other.
Friends Move Johann Lafer to Tears
On Thursday evening (June 25), Lafer hosted 55 friends, acquaintances, and companions at El Gaucho in Munich’s Viktualienmarkt. He also spoke about his connection to the Grossauer gastro family, with whom he began his culinary training 50 years ago.
Many companions attended, including actresses Jutta Speidel and Michaela May, star chefs Hans Haas and Mario Gamba, bar legend Charles Schumann, gourmet entrepreneur Michael Käfer, and former ski star Maria Riesch.
“I am very happy that so many people are here today,” says Johann Lafer, visibly moved. It becomes especially emotional when El-Gaucho creator Franz Grossauer embraces him, wishing for his recovery. Grossauer was unable to hold back the tears.
Lafer himself focuses on what is now most important to him. “The most important thing are the people who are honest with you and show compassion. Just like you.” Despite his incurable cancer, Johann Lafer remains fighting and is full of gratitude for the people by his side.
