It was do or die for PSV on Sunday in Amsterdam. And that was reflected on the field. Either Ajax ran out to a lead of seven loss points or PSV narrowed that gap to one point. The fact that so many interests were at stake was also reflected on the field. There was a lot of fighting.

Joey Veerman could enjoy that. “These kinds of disturbances are part of this topper. Everyone at Celtic – Rangers thinks this is fantastic.” It was a rather different reaction than that of Ajax’s trainer. Afterwards, he indicated that he was annoyed by the many disturbances.

“I think so!”

The midfielder went into the fights on the field. “With the first, Luuk de Jong gets a slap. Then everyone flies on it. After the game, I didn’t think much was going on. Some of our guys were just happy with the win. They didn’t like that.”

PSV could fall seven points behind in a defeat. Now it is about Ajax, although the team from Amsterdam has played one less game. The midfielder was asked whether this will be PSV’s year. “I think so!” said Veerman convincingly. “I think it’s a good win. If we beat AZ next week, we will have had a good first half of the season.”

“It is very unfortunate that we cannot celebrate this victory with our supporters”

Ruud van Nistelrooij remained calm afterwards. “I don’t know how big the conclusion should be after today. We are where we are after thirteen matches, just like Ajax. The gap goes from four to one, which is very nice.”

Still, according to the trainer, there was a blemish: “It is a great pity that we cannot celebrate this victory with our supporters. Now there is a disturbance while otherwise we would have just been standing at the branch.” No away supporters were welcome in the Arena due to disturbances at the Johan Cruijff Scale.
